Phil SauerChallenging the mind and body to strengthen the spirit - since 1975

Sensei Sauer is a dynamic teacher with tremendous insight into the practical applications and strategy of martial arts.

Sensei Sauer began his martial arts training in 1968. He became a student of Master Tadashi Yamashita in 1970, and has enjoyed a close, personal, relationship with him since 1972.

Along with his instructor Gerald Samson, and close training partner Tim Koch, Sensei Sauer established the Ki Mind & Body Karate School, on Milwaukees East Side. Sensei Sauer took over as head instructor in 1975.

From 1975 to 1983 Sensei Sauer operated a concert security company. He provided service at major music venues, throughout the Midwest, working with acts such as Van Halen, Diana Ross, Crosby Stills and Nash, Def Leppard, Bruce Springsteen, and many more.

In 1979 he became the head of Martial Arts instruction at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. Sensei Sauer developed Womens Assault Prevention Program (W.A.P.P.) which has been part of the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee programming since 1980. His classes at the University are fully accredited courses: a testament to the depth and breadth of his martial arts knowledge, as well as his exceptional instructional skills. In 1994 Sensei Sauer founded the Young American Martial Arts Clubs, which provides quality martial arts instruction to students 14 and under, throughout Southeastern Wisconsin.

For more than 30 years Sensei Sauer has taught, and demonstrated with Master Yamashita throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. A few high points include demonstrating in Tel Avi, Israel (1986), the World-wide Okinawan Martial Arts Festival in Naha, Okinawa (1990), and annual seminars in Athens Greece and Plodiv, Bulgaria.

One of the pioneers of marital arts in Milwaukee, Mr. Sauer has run a successful youth karate program in public schools throughout Southeastern Wisconsin, and has been director of martial arts classes at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee since 1979. He has directed an accredited woman's assault prevention program at UWM since 1985 and has developed numerous corporate assault prevention programs including those at Time Insurance, Harley Davidson, Inc., and the Milwaukee Teachers association.

Gerry Samson

Gerry Samson

In 1969 Sensei Samson founded the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee karate program through the Milwaukee Academy of Karate. In 1970 he held the first summer camp seminar with Master Yamashita and other prominent martial artists throughout the US.

In 1972, he started Ki Mind and Body karate school in Shorewood, WI along with Sensei Phil Sauer and Sensei Tim Koch. Ki Mind and Body was the first Shorin Ryu karate school in the state of Wisconsin to be affiliated with Master Yamashita.

Sensei Samson was also instrumental in marketing and forming the American Karate Association of which Sensei Yamashita was the head instructor. In 1973, he traveled to Japan with Master Yamashita to star in the feature film The Karate 2.

In 1975, upon his graduation from Marquette Dental School, he turned Ki Mind and Body over to Sensei Sauer and moved to Atlanta to pursue advanced dental degrees.

Today Sensei Samson is one of most respected pediatric orthodontists in the U.S. and throughout the world. He contributes much of his success to the principles of bushido that he learned in martial arts and continues to practice martial arts today. Sensei Samson was one of Master Yamashitas highest ranking black belts before he turned over Ki Mind and Body.

Sometimes described as an educational entertainer, Gerry Samson completed pediatric dental residency at Emory University in 1979 and orthodontics at Northwestern University in 1981 under the direction of Dr. Hal Perry.

Gerry offers meaty clinical presentations spiced with a blend of biting wit, edgy humor, and sauced with evidenced based literature. In addition to his private orthodontic practice, he holds formal appointments at 8 universities in the United States, Australia and New Zealand.

Always armed with unusually high quality hand out materials for seminar attendees, Gerrys zany, brainy and engaging methods have made him one of todays most popular educators. Participants are certain to enjoy a unique educational, clinical experience that is both informative and motivating.

Dr. Timothy Koch

Tim Koch co-founder of Ki Mind & Body Systems was one of the most dominant kata competitors in the 1970's, winning numerous championships. Tim's precision combined with his self-discipline made him an accomplished martial artist and a role model to many of the students of Ki Mind & Body.

Since leaving Ki Mind & Body, Tim has approached life with the same intensity. Tim has accomplished degrees in dentistry and medicine, and currently works as an emergency physician throughout the Milwaukee Metropolitan area.

Currently Tim and his wife Sue are raising three boys in Mequon and Tim is again leading and encouraging his sons to excellence in life.
